July marks the tragic 10th anniversary of the Aurora theater shooting, which stole twelve lives and left countless others with life-changing injuries and trauma. In the years since that horrible event, we have worked with many tireless advocates to pass gun safety laws at the state and federal level. While these efforts rightly get a lot of attention, we want to focus on a different kind of group as this tragiversary approaches: Survivors Empowered.

Survivors Empowered is led by Sandy & Lonnie Phillips, whose daughter Jessi was killed in the Aurora shooting. Unfortunately, thousands of people across the country have suffered the same kind of loss which rocked the Phillips' lives ten years ago, and it's those loved ones who Survivors Empowered exists to support. When mass shootings strike, Sandy & Lonnie work to connect parents, survivors, and other loved ones with aid, professional services, and a supportive community of other survivors to help them through the worst time in their lives. That is why they went to Buffalo; it's why they went to Uvalde; and it's why we are holding a fundraiser to support their crucial work.

There are so many great groups doing vital work on gun violence prevention--but few groups do what Survivors Empowered does. Sandy & Lonnie bring love and support to those who need it the most, when they need it the most. Changing our laws to prevent senseless gun violence is the ultimate goal--but, until we accomplish it, the work Sandy & Lonnie do is indispensable.
